In today’s post, we’re going to take a look at some examples of one-dimensional series that we have at **Smartick**—get your thinking caps on.

But, let’s start with some simple examples. Here, we have an example that asks us to identify the pattern:

Look carefully at our worm friend. The first thing that we need to do in this kind of problem is look at the **shapes of the objects.** In this example, we see that all the shapes are clouds, so one of the patterns is:

After studying the shapes, we have to look at the colors: blue – orange – blue – orange… So, the pattern is:

In order to solve the problem correctly, we have to select the shapes and colors accordingly.

###### Let’s look at a more challenging example:

Just as before, carefully look first at the shape of the pictures. We have crayons – a palette – a paintbrush – crayons – a palette – a paintbrush…

So in other words, in the next blank, we’d have to put crayons. What color crayons? Let’s looks at the colors of the series:** blue – purple – red – red – red**… So, we have to put blue crayons in the next blank.

Let’s keep following the series. Now, we need:

**Shape:**palette**Color:**purple

And we keep going! Now we can finish it!

To sum up, in order to do 1-dimensional series problems, you have to follow the steps below:

- You need to carefully observe the way the shapes are ordered and identify the pattern
- Pay attention to the colors of the pictures and identify their pattern as well.
- Combine the two patterns and put in the next picture.
- If, for example, you face a problem where you need to complete the series but the blank spots are in the middle instead of at the end, like you can see here:

What you can do is forget the last pictures (the green cloud, the red moon, the blue sun and the orange cloud) and finish the series as if they weren’t there. When you’re done, you can check to see if you got the series right. And that’s it!
